The Enlightenment
philosophes had argued that
the application of science and reason would lead to a better society for all. Did
the extraordinary changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution
represent progress?
Thesis:
The Industrial Revolution
took place in England because its liberal government
encouraged the exploitation of education and freed up
venture capitalists to finance the invention of the
technology which would transform the means of production.
Progress was achieved for English society during this period
because the standard of living rose for all fulfilling
utilitarian conceptions of social justice. The greater good
was served for the greatest number of England's citizens.
Even so, the new industrial economy produced cities
struggling to cope with poverty, and the social gap between
rich and poor increased substantially. A Radical liberal
reform movement emerged which ultimately extended the vote
to the workers and enabled the passage of laws which
regulated the industries to ensure job safety, a shorter
work day and the end to child labor.

Topic: The Crisis of Liberalism in Early 20th Europe:
Overall Essay Question: Why did liberalism fail in so many countries
during the crisis years of the early 20th century? What have we learned
about strengths and weaknesses of liberal political systems that we can
put to good use during the 21st century?
Specific Question: What is Lorca's political and
psychological point in this political allegory/surreal political poem?
In other words, what is the relationship between oppression and
repression?
Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba,
(outline)
Act Two: Action: La Poncia encourages the girls to dream, but she seeks
to prevent Adela from acting on her fantasies. Bernarda believes she
has everything under control until La Poncia forces her to see the
truth.
Act Three: Night. The bells of the rosary are heard, interrupted
by the hooves of the stallion, smashing apart its stable so that it
can get to the mares in heat. |
