1. What does your character want in this scene?
To convince her rather stubborn
son to accept that his father is as good as dead because he has betrayed
Scotland, possibly to make it easier for her to find a new husband, as she
does not seem so inclined to mourn for her current husband. It is possible
that she is simply bitter because he has abandoned them in their castle
without a word, causing her to believe he truly is a traitor.
She then probably wants to get away from the
assassins.
2. What is your character’s motivation for doing what he or
she does?
So she can marry a new suitor
more easily, not wanting her son to be so stubborn about it. She flees the
scene when her son is stabbed to death before her very eyes, needing to
survive to find help.
3. What obstacles stand in his or her way?
Her obnoxious son who refuses to
believe his father is dead and is angry with his mother for wanting a new
one so immediately, believing his father to be alive and not necessarily a
traitor. The obstacle of her surviving comes in the form of murderers, who
don’t want her to survive thus creating a conflict.
4. What happens when your character confronts these obstacles?
She continues to try
and convince her son but is relatively unsuccessful in breaking through to
the witty young man, finally growing highly annoyed at him and seeming to
give up! She runs when she sees the murderers do their job and kill her
son, probably being killed offstage later by them.
5. Are there any distinctive elements in your character’s way
of speaking? (Is his or her language elaborate, plain, musical, or what?)
She’s very affectionate to her
child, often referring to him as “poor” or “little” or “sirrah”,
giving her a sort of babying and “matter-of-fact” tone. Her stern voice
shows when she angrily tells the assassin to know his place, showing that
despite her anger at her husband she still feels he is higher than filth
such as them.
6. What is your character thinking during the scene? (How does
he or she react to the other characters and events?)
She focuses on convincing her Son to
see from her point of view in the beginning of the scene, thinking bitter
thoughts about her husband until the messenger who hastily bids her to run
away interrupts her. She does not think that she needs to, as she has done
nothing and believes nothing wrong happens to the innocent. This is
incorrect as it happens, because moments later two murderers come in and
slaughter her family. She is defiant against them however and shows her
strong will with her ability to boldly insult the nasty looking villains,
but is ultimately killed along with the rest.
