Macbeth Act IV Scene 2

1. What happens in your scene? Outline the basic events.

 

a.     Lady Macduff complains bitterly about her husband’s death, and her son tries to console her, saying that he can’t be dead.

b.    Lady Macduff calls her Husband a traitor. 

c.     The Son says that liars and swearers should take over the honest men, showing his naivety and innocence.

d.    A Messenger comes in to warn them that danger might befall them.

e.     The Son is murdered and Lady Macduff runs away screaming.

2. What do you think are the key purposes of your scene?

a.     To show that Macbeth has continued into his descent into madness and evil, as he is even willing to murder a child.

b.    To anger Macduff in order to inspire him to avenge his family against Macbeth.

c.     As somebody is finally killed onstage, it shows how the play is taking a darker tone. 

 

3. How does this scene fit into Shakespeare’s overall purpose in the play?

a.     To demonstrate Macbeth’s madness.

b.    To illustrate the tragic nature of the play.

 

4. Defend your company’s choice of production style.

We are doing this production in the typical Shakespearean style. This most clearly captures the essence of the scene’s nature and the way the play was meant to be interpreted.
