Introduction

The Scene
Our group will adapt the first 133 lines of Act 4 Scene 1 from Macbeth. This scene depicts Macbeth approaching three witches who show him three apparitions that warn him of his fate. After this, the ghost of Banquo and eight of his descendants appear, upsetting Macbeth tremendously. The scene itself acts as the final stage in the corruption of Macbeth that started with Macbeth's first encounter with the witches and continued through the murder of King Duncan. After this scene, Macbeth is no longer the man he once was, ruling as an evil, absolute king.

Our Interpretation

Understanding the role of this scene within the arc of the play, our group wanted to emphasize and communicate Macbeth's gradual corruption. Macbeth, played by Jordyn, entered the room somewhat calm and wearing all-white clothes. As the witches approached, they used charcoal to smother his clothes with black, symbolizing the evil engulfing Macbeth. The scene progresses while the witches remain very close to Macbeth until Lennox knocks and the witches disappear.

Script

Witch 3: Harpier cries. 'Tis time, 'tis time.
Witch 1: Swelt'red venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i' th' charmed pot
Witch 2: Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog
Witch 3: Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witch's mummy, maw and gulf
All Witches: Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble
Macbeth knocks on the door
Witch 2: By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes:
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks!
Macbeth enters from the side
Macbeth: How now, you secret, black, and midnight
hags!
What is 't you do?
All Witches approach Macbeth, getting very close
All Witches: A deed without a name
Macbeth: I conjure you, by that which you profess,
Howe'er you come to know it, answer me:
Though castles topple on their warders' heads;
Though palaces and pyramids do slope
Their heads to their foundations; though the treas-
ure
Of nature's germens tumble all together,
Even till destruction sicken, answer me
To what I ask you
Witch 1: Speak
Witch 2: Demand
Witch 3: We'll answer
Witch 1: Say, if th' hadst rather hear it from our
mouths,
Or from our masters?
Macbeth: Call 'em, let me see 'em
All Witches: Come, high or low,
Thyself and office deftly show!
Booming sound as Apparition 1 fades in from the back
All Witches take steps away from Macbeth

Macbeth: Tell me, thou unknown power -
Witch 1: He knows thy thought:
Hear his speech, but say thou nought
Apparition 1: Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware
Macduff!
Beware the Thane of Fife. Dismiss me: enough
Apparition 1 walks backwards and gradually fades out
All Witches lean back into Macbeth

Macbeth: Whate'er thou art, for thy good caution
thanks:
Thou hast harped my fear aright. But one word
more -
Witch 1: He will not be commanded. Here's an-
other,
More potent than the first.
Booming sound as Apparition 2 fades in from the back
All Witches take steps away from Macbeth

Apparition 2: Be bloody, bold, and resolute!
Laugh to scorn
The pow'r of man, for none of woman born
Shall harm Macbeth
Apparition 2 walks backwards and gradually fades out
Macbeth: Then live, Macduff: what need I fear of
thee?
But yet I'll make assurance double sure,
And take a bond of fate.
Booming sound as Apparition 3 fades in from the back
Macbeth: What is this,
That rises like the issue of a king,
And wears upon his baby-brow the round
And top of sovereignty?
All Witches: Listen, but speak not to 't
Apparition 3: Be lion-mettled, proud, and take
no care
Who chafes, who frets, or where conspirers are:
Macbeth shall never vanquished be until
Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill
Shall come against him
Apparition 3 walks backwards and gradually fades out
All Witches lean back into Macbeth

Macbeth: That will never be.
Who can impress the forest, bid the tree
Unfix his earth-bound root? Sweet bodements,
good!
Yet my heart Throbs to know one thing. Tell me, if you art
Can tell so much: shall Banquo's issue ever
Reign in this kingdom?
All Witches: Seek to know no more
Macbeth: I will be satisfied. Deny me this,
And an eternal curse fall on you! Let me know.
Why sink that cauldron? And what noise is this?
Witch 1: Show!
Witch 2: Show!
Witch 3: Show!
All Witches: Show his eyes, and grieve his heart;
Come like shadows, so depart!
Booming sound as Ghost of Banquo fades in from the back
Ghost of Banquo holds a mirror as he walks onstage (pointed towards a teacher)
All Witches take steps away from Macbeth

Macbeth: Thou art too like the spirit of Banquo.
Down!
Thy crown does sear mine eyelids. And thy hair,
Thou other gold-bound brow, is like the first.
A third is like the former. Filthy hags!
Why do you show me this? A fourth! Start, eyes!
What, will the line stretch out to th' crack of
doom?
Horrible sight! Now I see 'tis true;
For the blood-boltered Banquo smiles upon me,
And points at them for his. What, is this so?
Witch 1: But why
Stands Macbeth thus amazedly?
Come, sisters, cheer we up his sprites,
And show the best of our delights:
I'll charm the air to give a sound,
While you perform your antic round.
All Witches dance at a fast pace off the stage
