In writing Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s goals was to completely dispute the ideas put forth by Machiavelli. This man’s overall point is to say that it is necessary for a leader to be able to protect his kingdom from any enemy foreign or domestic. To do this a king or other leader must  deal with any situation firmly and sometimes in ways that would seem wrong, “Hence, it is necessary for a prince wishing to hold his own to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it or not according to necessity”(The Prince). The concept of a leader or powerful figure acting wrong or in a ruthless way is the key stone to Machiavelli’s idea of rationalizing an evil action. When a leader is week and indecisive, as in the tragedy of Macbeth, it is Machiavelli’s notion that that king must be removed for the greater good. These ideas are embodied in and clearly expressed by lady Macbeth and her reactions to the news, form the witches,   that Macbeth was to be king. Machiavelli’s ideas are father presented by lady Macbeth as she tries to convince her husband to give in to his animalistic instincts and do the dead, of killing Dunkin.
