1. What happens in your scene?
Outline the basic events.
a. Lady Macduff folds laundry
while her son washes up before dinner. They discuss in a “safe setting”
the traitor status of the boy’s father.
b. A friendly messenger enters the sanctuary. In a scurry, he attempts to
warn the two to abandon the castle.
c. Before the Mother and Son can escape, two assassins enter, slay the
messenger, and begin to assault the two.
d. The assassins slay the
unarmed family as well as a servant girl that runs by.

2. What do you think are the key purposes of your scene?
a. The scene shows the murder
of innocence, which is something
that only a true monster could take part in or organize.
b. It shows Macbeth and his men disrupting a sanctuary, holy to this
family.
c. It shows how quickly peace
can dissolve into Chaos.

3. How does this scene fit into Shakespeare’s overall purpose in the play?
In Macbeth, Shakespeare
shows Macbeth’s transformation from warrior to murderer; from honorable to
monstrous; and from sane to insane. The scene depicts men, on Macbeth’s
orders, murdering a mother and child. This scene is evidence of Macbeth
truly loosing his humanity.
4. Defend your company’s choice
of production style.
Rather than experiment with
different concepts, the group decided to make the scene as authentic as
possible, as to show the severity of the scene. There is no light in this
scene, and it should be taken very seriously.
