Passage Translations

PASSAGE:  Lady MacDuff- “Thou speak’st with all thy wit: and yet, i’ faith, with wit enough for thee.”

PARAPHRASE: Lady Macduff- “You are talking so witty, but I think you are too smart for your own good.”

 

PASSAGE: Son- “Then the liars and swearers are fools, for there are liars and swearers enow to beat the honest men and hang up them.”

PARAPHRASE: Son- “Then the criminals are stupid, because they outnumber the good men enough to overpower them and kill them.”

 

PASSAGE: Son- “If he were dead, you’ld weep for him: if you would not, it were a good sign that I should quickly have a new father.”

PARAPHRASE: Son- “If he died, then you would be sad and cry for him: but if you did not cry then I would know that I would probably have a new father soon.” (Implied that he would know that his mother was having an affair.)

 

PASSAGE: Lady Macduff- “I hope, in no place so unsanctified where such as thou mayst find him.”

PARAPHRASE: Lady Macduff- “I hope he is not in any place where any murderers or bad men like you could find him.”
