Being Macbeth in Macbeth 5.5
In this scene, I intend to express the variety of emotions Macbeth is going through at this crucial moment in the plot. Obviously, with an army moving towards the castle, Macbeth boasts and shouts to his castle, “Our castle’s strength will laugh a siege to scorn.” When quickly interrupted by his wife’s shocking death, he momentarily grieves and then ‘mans’ up, “she should have died hereafter,” but he then breaks into a woeful monologue. The more natural, good-hearted Macbeth comes out from behind the twisted one and uses metaphor to express his remorse, “Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow…” After hearing news of Birnham Wood coming toward Dunsinain, Macbeth begins to realize his doom and panics. Now he wishes to go back and change what he has done, “I ‘gin to grow aweary of the sun and wish the estate of the world were now undone!” My character has to change from bold, to sad, and finally to scared. These changing moods help the scene bring out the tragic emotion of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and without them the scene could never be a true Shakespeare act.
