Summary: The scene begins as Macbeth and Banquo walk to Forres to greet King Duncan. Suddenly, the witches or “weird sisters” appear. Macbeth and Banquo are startled, wondering whether the ‘weird sisters’ are truly “inhabitants o' the earth.” The witches respond with words of praise toward Macbeth, and they hail him with the titles of Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and the future King of Scotland. Macbeth is taken aback. He believes the true Thane of Cawdor is still alive, and one cannot merely take another man’s title. The notion of reaching the throne seems additionally puzzling, for Macbeth is loyal to Duncan. Plus, Malcolm and Donalbain are the heirs to the Kingdom. As a result, Macbeth charges the witches to elaborate, but unfortunately they vanish. Banquo confronts his good friend, and he suggests the dangerous consequences of wholeheartedly committing to the ‘weird sisters’ words of foresight. Macbeth, however, seems disinterested to dwell on the possibility he has “eaten on the insane root.” He and Banquo then discuss the prophecy’s potential impact, when Ross and Angus enter. As noble servants to Duncan, they come to officially crown Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor. Once again, Macbeth reverts to a state of disbelief. In his mind, the witches’ words have come true, and the throne of King awaits him. As expected, Macbeth’s ambitious thoughts undermine his social prowess. He accepts the title and later bides goodbye to the nobles quite awkwardly. Before the scene closes, Macbeth and Banquo further recount the prophecy.
