Company Report

The production style that our group selected demonstrates an upscale New York business setting in the modern twenty first century, and as a result, we also incorporate modern props such as crutches. From the signal of a trumpet call that marks the inception of the scene, a king introduces a bloodied captain, who endured a bloody assault. The king announces his physical state, proclaiming, “What bloody man is that, that he can report, as seemeth by his plight, of the revolt, the newest state” (1.2.1-3). From this image, our group agreed to utilize crutches and a bloody bandage to distinguish the wounded captain. Additionally concerning the captain, Jason Yon (’13) and Christian Lynch (’13) exchange roles to attempt to even the quantity of lines. Secondly, with the captain’s first lines, he illustrates the battlefield where Macbeth and Banquo fight out of desperation. This quotation influenced us to implement a secondary part to this scene that coexists with the main focus of the speech, “As two spent swimmers, that do cling together and choke their art…for brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name distaining fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution” (1.2. 7-9;16-18). We selected Nerf™ guns as the arsenal for the two fighters, Wyatt Dickerson (’13) playing Banquo and Ethan Levine (’13) playing Macbeth. Furthermore, and most significantly, we selected our modern setting due to the king’s involvement with multiple people, which lead us to view him as a president of a large business who is currently dealing with his employees.  The king exclaims, “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!” (1.2.24). This displays his praise for his staff and his association with the organization. Collectively, all the props which we used as well as the actions, and setting are inspired from the Shakespeare’s original text.
