The Spanish Civil War

What happens when a spontaneous peasant uprising against an oppressive government becomes embroiled in global ideological conflict? The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) was not only the prelude to World War II, but it was also the prelude to many of the colonial conflicts of the Cold War: the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Indonesian Civil War to name a few. This interdisciplinary course will examine the events, literature, and art of the Spanish Civil War. We will study the ideological debate between the many factions in conflict: fascist, socialist, anarchist and liberal.  We will read fiction, journalism and poetry by Hemingway, Orwell, Lorca, Dos Passos and others. We will analyze the art of Picasso, Miro, Dali, Motherwell and others. We will watch films including Ken Loach’s Land and Freedom (1995) and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Mirror (1974). It should be a great course.
