Heinrich von
Treitschke, Politics
Heinrich
von Treitschke,(1834-1896), a very influential historian and
university professor, was active in politics in his youth as a
liberal but in the 1870s he became an intense nationalist,
militarist, and anti-Semite. Thus, he is a good example of the
kind of person that Bismarck was able to seduce away from
liberal, democratic values through appeals to German
nationalism. Below you will a few short, characteristic
passages from his Politics (1874-1896. Pay attention not only
to his vision of the nation, but also to his values and the
kinds of appeals he used.
“The features of
history or virile, unsuited to sentimental or feminine
natures. Brave peoples alone have existence, an evolution
or a future; the weak and cowardly perish and perish
justly. The grandeur of history lies in the perpetual
conflict of nations ..."
"It is war which
fosters the political idealism which the materialist
rejects. What a disaster for civilization it would be if
mankind blotted its heroes from memory."
"The long oblivion
into which this principle [war] had fallen is a proof of how
effeminate the science of government had become in civilian
hands." |
