Bible, King James Version
excerpts from Job.3
[1] After this opened Job his mouth, and
cursed his day.
[2] And Job spake, and said,
[3] Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which
it was said, There is a man child conceived.
[4] Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above,
neither let the light shine upon it
…
[11] Why died I not
from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the
belly? |
excerpts from
Job.7
[11] Therefore I will
not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will
complain in the bitterness of my soul.
[12] Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me?
[13] When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my
complaint;
[14] Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through
visions:
[15] So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than
my life.
[16] I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my
days are vanity.
[17] What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou
shouldest set thine heart upon him?
[18] And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him
every moment?
[19] How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till
I swallow down my spittle?
[20] I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver
of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a
burden to myself?
[21] And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away
mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me
in the morning, but I shall not be. |
excerpts from
Job.9
[22] This is one thing, therefore I said it,
He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
[23] If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of
the innocent.
[24] The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth
the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he? |
excerpts from
Job.16
[11] God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned
me over into the hands of the wicked.
[12] I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath
also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set
me up for his mark.
[13] His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my
reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall
upon the ground.
[14] He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon
me like a giant.
[15] I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my
horn in the dust.
[16] My face is foul with weeping, and my eyelids is the
shadow of death;
[17] Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is
pure. |
excerpts from
Job.19
[6] Know now that God hath overthrown me,
and hath compassed me with his net.
[7] Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud,
but there is no judgment.
[8] He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set
darkness in my paths.
[9] He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my
head.
[10] He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine
hope hath he removed like a tree.
[11] He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth
me unto him as one of his enemies. |
excerpts from
Job.21
[7] Wherefore do the
wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
[8] Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their
offspring before their eyes.
[9] Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God
upon them.
[10] Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth,
and casteth not her calf.
[11] They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their
children dance.
[12] They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of
the organ.
[13] They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to
the grave.
[14] Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire
not the knowledge of thy ways.
[15] What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what
profit should we have, if we pray unto him? |
excerpts from
Job.29
[12] Because I delivered the poor that cried,
and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
[13] The blessing of him that was ready to perish
came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for
joy.
[14] I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
[15] I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to
the lame.
[16] I was a father to the poor: and the cause
which I knew not I searched out.
[17] And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and
plucked the spoil out of his teeth. |
excerpts from
Job.30
[16] And now my soul is poured out upon me;
the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
[17] My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my
sinews take no rest.
[18] By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it
bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
[19] He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and
ashes.
[20] I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and
thou regardest me not.
[21] Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou
opposest thyself against me.
[22] Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon
it, and dissolvest my substance.
[23] For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the
house appointed for all living. |

Job.34
Punishment for Secret Sin?
[10] Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of
understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and
from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
[11] For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause
every man to find according to his ways.
[12] Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the
Almighty pervert judgment.
[13] Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath
disposed the whole world?
[14] If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his
spirit and his breath;
[15] All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again
unto dust.
[16] If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the
voice of my words.
[17] Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou
condemn him that is most just?
[18] Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes,
Ye are ungodly?
[19] How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of
princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the
work of his hands.
[20] In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled
at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without
hand.
[21] For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his
goings.
[22] There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers
of iniquity may hide themselves.
[23] For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should
enter into judgment with God.
[24] He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set
others in their stead.
[25] Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in
the night, so that they are destroyed.
[26] He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
[27] Because they turned back from him, and would not consider
any of his ways:
[28] So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and
he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
[29] When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and
when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done
against a nation, or against a man only:
[30] That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
[31] Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne
chastisement, I will not offend any more:
[32] That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity,
I will do no more.
[33] Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it,
whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak
what thou knowest.
[34] Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken
unto me.
[35] Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were
without wisdom.
[36] My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of
his answers for wicked men.
[37] For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands
among us, and multiplieth his words against God. |
excerpts from
Job.36
[5] Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not
any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
[6] He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to
the poor.
[7] He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with
kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and
they are exalted.
[8] And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of
affliction;
[9] Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions
that they have exceeded.
[10] He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that
they return from iniquity.
[11] If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in
prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
[12] But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and
they shall die without knowledge. |

Job.38
God Answers Job Out of the Whirlwind
[1] Then the LORD
answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
[2] Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without
knowledge?
[3] Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee,
and answer thou me.
[4] Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
declare, if thou hast understanding.
[5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who
hath stretched the line upon it?
[6] Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid
the corner stone thereof;
[7] When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God
shouted for joy?
[8] Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if
it had issued out of the womb?
[9] When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness
a swaddling band for it,
[10] And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and
doors,
[11] And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here
shall thy proud waves be stayed?
[12] Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused
the dayspring to know his place;
[13] That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the
wicked might be shaken out of it?
[14] It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a
garment.
[15] And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high
arm shall be broken.
[16] Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou
walked in the search of the depth?
[17] Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou
seen the doors of the shadow of death?
[18] Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if
thou knowest it all.
[19] Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness,
where is the place thereof,
[20] That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that
thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
[21] Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the
number of thy days is great?
[22] Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast
thou seen the treasures of the hail,
[23] Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against
the day of battle and war?
[24] By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east
wind upon the earth?
[25] Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of
waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
[26] To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the
wilderness, wherein there is no man;
[27] To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the
bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
[28] Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of
dew?
[29] Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of
heaven, who hath gendered it?
[30] The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep
is frozen.
[31] Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose
the bands of Orion?
[32] Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst
thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
[33] Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the
dominion thereof in the earth?
[34] Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance
of waters may cover thee?
[35] Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto
thee, Here we are?
[36] Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given
understanding to the heart?
[37] Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the
bottles of heaven,
[38] When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave
fast together?
[39] Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite
of the young lions,
[40] When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to
lie in wait?
[41] Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones
cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat. |
excerpts from
Job.39
[1] Knowest thou the time when the wild
goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when
the hinds do calve?
[2] Canst thou number the months that they
fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
[3] They bow themselves, they bring forth their
young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
[4] Their young ones are in good liking, they
grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto
them.
[5] Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who
hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?
[6] Whose house I have made the wilderness, and
the barren land his dwellings.
[7] He scorneth the multitude of the city,
neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
[8] The range of the mountains is his pasture,
and he searcheth after every green thing.
[9] Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee,
or abide by thy crib?
[10] Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band
in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
[11] Wilt thou trust him, because his strength
is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
[12] Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring
home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
[13] Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the
peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
[14] Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and
warmeth them in dust,
[15] And forgetteth that the foot may crush
them, or that the wild beast may break them.
[16] She is hardened against her young ones, as
though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without
fear;
[17] Because God hath deprived her of wisdom,
neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
[18] What time she lifteth up herself on high,
she scorneth the horse and his rider.
[19] Hast thou given the horse strength? hast
thou clothed his neck with thunder?
[20] Canst thou make him afraid as a
grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
[21] He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in
his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
[22] He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted;
neither turneth he back from the sword.
[23] The quiver rattleth against him, the
glittering spear and the shield.
[24] He swalloweth the ground with fierceness
and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of
the trumpet.
[25] He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he
smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the
captains, and the shouting.
[26] Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and
stretch her wings toward the south?
[27] Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and
make her nest on high?
[28] She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon
the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
[29] From thence she seeketh the prey, and her
eyes behold afar off.
[30] Her young ones also suck up blood: and
where the slain are, there is she. |

Job.40
[1] Moreover the LORD answered Job, and
said,
[2] Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he
that reproveth God, let him answer it.
[3] Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
[4] Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine
hand upon my mouth. |
