Schinkel's canvas features an impressive German cathedral and medieval town with the approaching forces of a victorious German prince. Painted in 1815 after Prussia's contribution to the victory over Napoleon, Medieval City on a River fused old German triumphs with the recent one and gave expression to the spirit of national beginnings that inspired German artists of that time.
