The painting is almost too big to describe in detail. At the center of the canvas, Viatautus, the Grand Duke of Lithuania (clad in red), raises his sword to inspire his men. To his right, in white, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Ulrich von Jungingen, meets his death. On Viatautus's left, Zawisza the Black, a Polish knight holding a crossbow, similarly inspires his troops. Matejko's canvas focuses on these three individuals, but it also conveys a mass of soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat, in painstaking detail. |
