A One-Act Play Workshop

Choose a classmate's play to work on.

Use the following criteria to offer constructive criticism:

Is the dramatic action clear?

Write a ‘character engine’ on the board before reading the play out loud.

Character Obstacles Objectives:

Is there tension and suspense to the rising action of the play?
Has the playwright put the characters in a crisis situation, as close to the climax as possible?

 Is the setting clear?

Where are we?
What kind?
How can we tell?
Are the conditioning forces of the environment random, or do they contribute by heightening the action of the play?

Are the characters realistic?

Does the playwright know his main character’s agenda at all times?
Has the playwright gotten inside his main characters?
Do the characters sound real? Has the playwright caught the characters' true voices?
